Happy Birthday to Gary Winogrand

Happy Birthday to Garry Winogrand, the iconic street photographer of the 20th century. I remember when I saw the show of his postumus work at SFMOMA a couple of years ago. His friends did not do him any favors by printing and displaying everything they found in his studio - I remember my eyes glazing over before I got through the first room and there was room after room after room, full of nondiscript photos

But I prefer Winogrand to the upcoming show at SFMOMA of Diane Arbus, whose coldly cruel photos of society’s damaged outcasts does not reflect well on our culture’s callous treatment of those who deserve compassion from us, not snickering and juvenile insults.

Artsy

Diane Arbus was criticized by Susan Sontan for her "freak show. "I am glad that at least one serious American thinker saw through the hoopla to the lack of compassion

I know the name of Winograd, but not a huge compendium of his work. I'll take your word on it. Of course, I know who Diane Arbus is (was). I agree with your take on her photos. They're interesting but somehow mocking and, yes, snickering. I don't know a lot about her, but I may delve into that now that you bring this up. Her photographs do not have much compassion in them.
