Jean-Léon Gérôme


May 11, 1824. VESOUL, FRANCE.- Jean-Léon Gérôme was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as Academicism. The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits and other subjects, bringing the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. Gérôme us another of your featured artists who is new to me.The paintings are really something, but what gets me is the sculpture. I am always amazed by people who can *see* what's in the stone and then bring it out. The body sculpture in the middle featured work is very detailed and lifelike.
