Van Gogh On A Monday

Late in life, Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo: "I almost think that these canvases will tell you what I cannot say in words." Sometimes it's best to "just" look.

This painting of "Irises" used to hang in a small charming museum in Portland, Maine, called The Joan Whitney Payson Gallery. It was purchased by Mrs. Charles Shipton Payson (a great supporter of the arts AND baseball) and inherited by her son John who sold it for $53.9 million in 1987. During the 1980s I had a studio in Portland, was an art writer for the Maine Sunday Telegram, and I had an exhibition at The Payson Gallery in 1982. The whole art community was horrified by this sale. You've since seen Irises reproduced millions of times. The actual colors don't even vaguely resemble what I see on my screen - the greens were dark and intense and the blues were blue violet. But it's a great painting anyway, no matter what the color. Thanks for posting.
